Lifeguard Certification Class
This is Y of the USA YMCA Lifeguard Certification course is an intensive 3-day course led by certified lifeguard instructors. This class provides hands-on experience that prepares students for equipment-based rescues for aquatic environments, accident prevention, and decision-making skills. Training in lifesaving skills such as lifeguarding and CPR presents opportunities for youth to take on greater responsibility for themselves and others.
This YMCA Lifeguard Training Program is an integrated curriculum that successfully trains lifeguards through proven training methods and state-of-the-art lifeguard rescue skills. The course includes lifeguard rescue skills, First Aid, CPR for Professional Rescuers, Emergency Oxygen Support, and Automated External Defibrillation.
After enrollment, if you decide to work at the Y, your certification is FREE.

Our YMCA lifeguard certification course is a 3-day class and attendance is REQUIRED all three days.
What to bring: Bathing suit (one-piece for girls), towel, lunch, snacks, water, ID, whistle, CPR mask.
Physical Competency Requirements:
Phase 1 – Continuous swim: 350 yards
• Swim 100 yards of front crawl
• Swim 100 yards of breaststroke
• Swim 50 yards of each of the following:
• Front crawl with head up
• Breaststroke with the head up
• Elementary backstroke kick with hands on the chest/stomach
Phase 2 – Tread water
• Tread water for two minutes without arms
Phase 3 – Combined skills event (no goggles)
• Participants start in the water at one end of the pool.
• Sprint for approximately 60 feet (20 yards), and then perform an arm-over-arm surface dive in 7 to 10 feet of water (or maximum depth of
training facility).
• Pick up an object (dive ring) from the bottom or surface of the pool,
hold the object with both hands, and tread water for at least one
minute, using your legs only.
• Swim the remaining length of the pool on your back, holding the
object with both hands. Place the object on the deck and hoist yourself
out of water.
• Immediately begin compressions on an adult manikin for one minute
or 100 compressions.
• Scan and recognize. Your instructor will give verbal directions to
complete the remaining tasks after compressions.
